How a city’s history and social changes relate to  old movie theatres memories?

This is the central wonder at the HOMO KINEMA project. A full length documentary which follows my instincts hunting for a space and time to bring the past into the present and the future days.

The name HOMO KINEMA defines a specific category of human kind born in the end of the XIX Century and that has the old movie theatres as their natural habitat. This human kind is passing now for the most big challenge of its history: to survive through the new mobile, cheap and individual ways to watch movies, to survive to the forgotten, to survive demolition,

To collectively share senses inside a dark room also defines the HOMO KINEMA pleasures and the movie theatres is their habitat where reflected the cultural, political and social rules of the “outside” city.Therefor, HOMO KINEMA is also a dialogue between the place of entertainment and the society where it is located.

"... movie theatres were the first public space shared by all age groups and classes, the first worldwide web in a way: for the first time in history, people in far flung regions of the world were able to watch the same shows. It was an exhibition practice which for us is also a continuation of our research into an imaginary Kinomuseum, where museum is re-invented by cinema."

A working in progress multimedia project made through artistic residencies and world wide experiences.

The central idea of HOMO KINO  is to create a piece of documental art made by a great variety of resources, textures, interviews, images and sounds collected by me through the years.

The artistic residency projects I've participated had four main objectives:
1 - To collect memories, stories and facts about the local traditional movie theaters.
2 - To produce a short documentary with the collected material.
3 - To screen the short documentary to the local community as a "give back" to the sources.
4 - Show short brazilian movies as an cultural interchange.

Although HOMO KINEMA is made by the materials collect along the residences period, its final format will be free from the traditional documentary language used in the short pieces that I've made in the Tijuana and Greensboro experiments.
.

The HOMO KINEMA's next step is to develop a new and deeper way to share and display history, stories and memories.
